First off, we decided now to potty train Gwen as we are registering her for preschool in the fall, but she needs to be potty trained to be able to go. I thought we'd start now so we would have to rush her in August.
After reading different blogs (like this one) and talking with my sisters, I felt confidant and ready.
Monday was going to be the day.
I prepared myself by gathering all the supplies I needed:
candies and rice-crispie squares (for prizes)
chips and salty snacks
LOTS of juice
several pairs of panties
pull-ups and plastic panties
potty seat
toys/games/books
timer
And then I phoned my sister for a pep-talk.
I can do this! Gwen can do this!
On the first day, I get Gwen dressed and into panties.
Getting her to wear her panties was easy as she sees her cousin, Evee, wearing them and knows that "big girls" wear panties. Of course, she wanted to be a "big girl" too.
I then tell Gwen that we are going to have a Potty Party for the entire day (I've actually been telling her about the party for days, so she'd pretty pumped that the day had finally came).
We celebrate by letting her eat a TON of chips and snacks and drinking all the juice she wants.
salty snacks = thirst = more juice = more pee
I show Gwen the timer and tell her that when she hears it beep,
that means we need to get to the potty as fast as we can.
The timer is set to go off in 15 minutes.
It goes off.
We run.
She sits.
But no pee.
It's alright, though, and Gwen picks a jelly-bean as a prize for sitting on the potty.
I set the timer for another 15 minutes.
It goes off.
We run.
She sits.
SHE PEES!!!
It's a Potty Party, so there is HUGE celebration and Gwen phones her Dad to share the news.
She was SO proud of herself.
I may have almost cried.
My little girl is growing up.
Yeah, we've had our fair share of accidents (the worst of which being at a friends house. It was awful and messy - I wouldn't be surprised if we're never invited over again. Oh, but please do!), but for the most part it has been a huge success.
Potty, Party, Pee, Poop, Panties, Pull-up.
These days my life is consumed with P's.
