Each year the church puts on a full scale nativity at Heritage Park, the week before Christmas. Last year we braved the -25 degree weather, with little Gwen in full winter garb. This year, however was pretty warm. In fact it rained a little bit while driving there!
Most randomly, we happened to park right beside one of Tanner's cousins and his family who also live in Calgary. It was nice to have company with us while we waited in line, especially when it's family. We had Brett take a family picture of us when we first were seated. When Tanner and I were looking through the pictures later that night, we laughed for a good 10 minutes when we saw Gwen's expression. It may very well be the worst picture of her to date. Ha ha ha!
The Nativity was wonderful, with beautiful sets, costumes, narration and music. A member of our ward was the usher and set us up with the best seats right in front. Gwen kept pointing to the fake chicken in front of her, to the sheep over by the shepher's "field" and to the donkey that she saw walking around behind the sets. "Horse!" she would exclaim. You can imagine how excited she was when the Three Kings walked right in front of us with llamas. "Horse!" Gwen exclaimed again. Lily sat quietly in my lap, bundled and warm (it was just
a little windy during the presentation).
After the presentation, the families and children were allowed to come down and meet the actors and pet the animals. We didn't get a picture of Gwen with any of the animals because, for some reason, Gwen was terrified of being up close to the animals and would scream and cry if we tried to get her to pet one of them. She did however touch the fake chicken prop. It was also fun seeing a family from our ward who were actors. I complimented their youngest son (age 5) on his performance. He responded with "Yeah. Is that all?" It was only 7:40 and he was hoping that he would be done for the night. Too bad he would continue to do a performance every 20 minutes until 9:00. Poor kid. I hope he made it; he was a cute shepherd.
All in all, it was a lovely evening and really brought focus and perspective to this busy Christmas season: to celebrate the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.
