Lady of the Night

I got a new job this week.

Oh, and don't be misled by the title.
Here are some clues :

Have you guessed it?
Okay, I know, it's not that cryptic.
I'm a NEWSPAPER CARRIER!

I have fond (and not so fond) memories of delivering papers in my neighborhood where I grew up. But those were the days were you wrangled  collected payment from customers and only got paid $80 at the end of the month. Nowadays you can easily make 10x that, even with the small(ish) paper route, and there's NO fee collection!

My first day night (oh, did I mention that I have to have all the papers delivered by 6am?) was on Monday. It was early, but the cool fresh air wakes me up. Plus, I'm running from house to house and working up a warm sweat, which is exhilerating. With killer tunes playing in my ears, I feel alive.

The trickiest part about delivering papers, especially right now, is that there is ice EVERYWHERE and I have to be so careful not to slip as I'm running to and from car to house to house to car. Exhibit D (above) is my lovely scraped knee that I recieved from slipping not once, but twice onto the gravelly road. When I showed Gwen my boo-boo, Gwen laughed, thinking that I had smeared jam on my knee. No sympathy from the little one.

The decision to get a paper route was a pretty quick decision, but I'm so glad that I made it! Yes, it's every day. Yes, I have to wake up at 3am. But, honestly, I love it. With this added income, we can build our food storage and our financial reserve, which is something we've never really been able to do.

It feels good : )

  1. Jenny! You are awesome and motivated! And I can't believe that your papers have to be there by 6! Dave does some routes here but his deadline is 7. Hope it keeps being a blast (and that you keep raking in the dough).

  2. Good for you Jenny! I had a couple routes when we lived in Saskatoon, so I know the feeling.
