I wish that I had one of these when Gwen was an infant : a Moby Wrap. Well, it's not actually a real Moby Wrap (those are like $50), mine is homemade and cost me $12. My SIL, Brooklyn, introduced me to the whole baby wrap thing a couple of years ago, but it was only until having Lily that I really understood what the whole craze was about. This baby wrap is AMAZING! I've carried Lily around in the wrap for hours and never experienced any sort of neck/shoulder/back discomfort, which is something I always experienced with the Infantino baby carrier we got for Gwen. Plus, Lily is always happy and comfy in the wrap, right close to her momma. I recommend this wrap to every new mother. And the best part is that there is no sewing inolved, just a pair of scissors. It's awesome. I'm sure there are lots of tutorials on how to make your own Moby Wrap on the internet, but the basic instructions go something like this:
- Go to a fabric store and check out their Jersey fabric. Try to find a Jersey knit that isn't too stretchy. About just as stretchy as a regular t-shirt. Keep in mind that you want the fabric to stretch width wise, not so much length wise.
- Once you've found a color you love, get it cut anywhere from 5-6 meters. Being a bigger gal, I wish that I had had the fabric cut to 6 m instead of 5m (when I'm all wrapped up there is just barely enough fabric at the end to tie.)
- The fabric that I purchased was about 44 inches in width, so I cut it in half down the middle to make TWO 5 m x 22 inch wraps. One for me. One for a gift.
- Starting at about 0.5-1 meter from each end, take your scissors and taper off the fabric so that it comes to a point, without losing any of it's length. You do this so that the fabric isn't as bulky at the ends where you are tying the knot.
Did any of that make sense? I'm sure that there are video tutorials or something on the web.
Speaking of video tutorials, I watched this one about 10 times to learn how to actually use the wrap. There are lots of different ways to wrap your baby (I once saw a woman in Banff carrying a infant in front and a toddler from her back, using a wrap! CA-RAZY! In the picture above I only have Lily in the wrap and was giving Gwen a piggy-back-ride that lasted 7 minutes) but this simple baby wrap is my favorite.
I love it. I love it. I love it.
And so will you.
* On a Side Note *

ReplyDeleteYes, the wrap is amazing!!! I love mine too. And I must say, that picture of you and your girls is TO.DIE.FOR!!!! I love it so so so much! We just bought a Ergo carrier too and I am so stoked to try it out! Soon, I'll look like you, with Nola on the back and Robbie on the front!!
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan too, of course! I'm so glad you love yours! A friend of mine tried using hers for the 1st time and nearly dropped her son!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 100 posts! I borrowed my sister's panda pocket wrap which is pretty much the same thing... I used it a lot at first, but I've slowly kinda forgotten about it. I should really get it out and use it more again. They are way more comfortable!
ReplyDeleteVery cute picture Jenny
