Hair History

Growing up, I was never one to have the longest hair. In grade 10, I even cut my hair super short. It was the beginning of a new millennium, the 'pixie cut' was all the rage and I got on the band wagon. I loved this hair cut, as I was a tom-boy and curls and braids were not really my style. Yet, looking back, I don't think I ever really knew how to style this type of hair.

Several years past; hairstyle came and went.
But through the years my hair generally never made it past my shoulders.

It wasn't until 2006, that I finally got in touch with my feminine side and embraced long hair. I remember one morning in December, getting up early with my best bud, MaryLou, borrowing her hair straightener in preparation for a mini-photo shoot with her cousin. I remember running my fingers through my long(ish) hair, feeling feminine, feeling pretty, and thinking 'I can get used to this.'

2006, I can't believe that that was six years ago.

In 2009, after Gwen was born. I realized that having long hair was really annoying when attempting to breastfeed, so I had my hair chopped (but still longer than my shoulders). Interestingly though, while breatfeeding Lily, I never was annoyed by my long hair. The last time I have had it cut (period) was March 19, 2011. Initially, I never intended to go this long before getting it cut again, but somewhere between Lily being born and Halloween, I decided to go a whole year before letting someone put scissors to my hair. I made this decision for three reasons:

1. Save money. Haircuts are expensive.
2. Curiosity. Could I really go a year without even an trim?
3. Long hair. Long hair to braid, curl and style in beautiful ways.

So, this is what happened.

1. I did indeed saved money.

There was a survey conducted by Tresemme
about how much an average women spends on their hair in a year:
Shampoos/Conditioner: $160
Styling Products: $120
Haircuts: $520-$850

For me, I didn't spend any money on haircuts and I haven't even used hairspray in the last 5 months.

2.  Curiosity appeased.

I'm getting my hair cut this evening, which means I went 366 days without a hair cut.
I did it!

3. I have long hair.

So long, that I've heard the Primary kids at church refer to me as 'the teacher with the long hair'.
The unfortunate thing is, is that I never do anything with it.
Sure I'll put it into a braid every once in a while, but my hair is probably in a messy-bun 60% of the time and air-dried down the rest of the time. I don't even straighten my hair, I'm so lazy.

So, yup.
I'm getting my hair cut tonight.
It's going to be short. It's going to be fun.
I'm going all out this time.

Right now, I'm saying goodbye to the hair mustache,
as I won't be able to do this this time tomorrow.

  1. So, does this mean you are getting a mohawk? If so, wow.

I remember when my kindergarten teacher suddenly went from straight hair to curly. For at least a few days I was a bit freaked out because I wasn't sure if this new curly-haired person wasn't someone else entirely. I imagine I was the only one in my class so affected, but keep an eye out for reactions in your primary class.

  3. Jenny, I'm honoured to be mentioned in your blog. I remember very well that photoshoot day, you still in crutches, me with (also) long curly hair. I haven't seen your hair really long, I hope you took a before picture and I can't wait for the after!!!
