Keeping it Holy

When I was a little girl my parents taught me how to keep the Sabbath Day holy. To a child it can be hard deciphering what activities are okay to do on Sunday and what are not . As a rule of thumb, I remember my dad stating "If you can't do it in a dress, then you shouldn't do it". In a single sentence my dad ruled out hundreds of possibilities: swimming, riding a bike, playing basketball, jogging, hiking, etc. However, jumping on a trampoline would be an obvious addition to this list, but it was an activity we almost ritualistically did each Sunday. Huh. Amusingly, going to the mall with friends could definitely be executed in a dress, yet it is totally inappropriate for the Sabbath Day. And what about boys?? I was always envious of my brothers as there was a bit more leniency to what they could do in a shirt and tie. Take this recent video of Tanner, with his brothers and nephew, as a perfect example. There would be NO WAY that I (or the rest of the women hollering behind the camera) could do that in a dress......well, at least not without being obscene :)

Needless to say, my dad's "rule of thumb" was simple, but confusing.

  1. Haha that is a funny rule of thumb that I think about almost every week. For example, the Duggar family in Arkansas always wear skirts, so they play basketball, ride bikes, hike, etc, in a skirt. And I could totally ride a bike in a skirt (if it wasn't at ALL windy out).
